One of God’s angels, Porzia Lorena Micou, precious to all who knew her, peacefully and bravely transitioned from this life into Glory on November 1, 2017 at the University of Chicago Hospital surrounded in love by her dear family and friends.
Porzia was the daughter of Bernita “Bitsy” Johnson and Londale Micou. She was born on June 4, 1983 in Merriville, Indiana. Porzia was the mother of two kind, intelligent and beautiful daughters, Anika and Alyssa. Porzia adored her girls and they were her pride and joy. Porzia’s life purpose and greatest work was to nurture and educate children of all walks of life. She was also a women’s activist, mentor, and advocate for fellow cancer warriors.
She was loved by many and she never met a stranger or upset baby or child she could not calm.
Porzia was raised in South Bend, Indiana. Our daughter, sister, mother and aunt began her formal education through the South Bend Community School Corporation. She attended Benjamin Harrison Elementary School,Navarre Middle School and John Adams High School. Porzia also attended Vincennes University, Holy Cross College and completed her certification in Montessori Education at Indiana University of South Bend. She excelled as a teacher and mentor to many children at the Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes Center for the Homeless classroom where she transformed the early childhood education program. Porzia worked to create a safe, stable learning environment to children who were residents at the Center for the Homeless. She went above the call of duty to ensure her students had a beautiful environment in which to learn and created many of the learning tools “works” herself during her free time. She taught by example, led effortlessly and provided guidance to her students and parents with her gracious loving spirit.
Porzia was truly a gift from God to her family and the community she served. Porzia was a brave soldier in her battle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer and wanted all women to fight and to be an advocate for early detection. She displayed a determined spirit with God, her family, and unceasing prayer for a medical cure.
