Anna Macalino Thompson

Anna Macalino Thompson, daughter of Richard and Jovita Thompson, age 42, was born February 8, 1978. She graduated from Balboa High School, SF, CA–Class of 1996. Anna excelled academically and continued her education at the UC Berkeley before obtaining her Master’s degree in Social Work at San Francisco State University. Anna’s career began her career counseling youth at the San Francisco County Adolescent/Youth Counselling Center and culminated in her exemplary work as an accomplished Social Worker with the Adult Protective Services department of the City and County of San Francisco before she medically retired in 2018.

Anna was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer sometime in 2018 but she continued to live on her own terms. She courageously fought the disease for several years; overcoming the pain only other cancer thrivers can fully appreciate, with an immeasurable dignity and grace that has guided Anna all her life.

Anna was a sports enthusiast. Along with playing countless sports—volleyball, basketball, track & field, and softball in high school, she enjoyed cheering on all of her home teams and shared her big love for the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Golden State Warriors attending games with family and friends anytime she could. Anna loved spending quality time with her family and friends, travelling, and enjoying good food.

Anna took a trip to Costa Rica in 2018, where she adopted the motto “pura vida” or “pure life” as a reminder to live positively and enjoy the happy times to the fullest. Anna taught us that no matter what battles we face, we can always find a reason to smile through them.

Anna’s thoughtfulness, kindness, and loving ways brought joy to everyone’s heart. Her concern for others was foremost before her own. She’s well-loved by everyone and will be deeply missed.

Anna is survived by parents: Richard Sr. and Jovita Thompson, and siblings: Charlotte, Richard Jr., Michael, Matthew, and Elizabeth, and will be especially remembered and greatly missed by her nieces and nephews: Christopher, Stephen, Mark, Louis, Bruce, Joshua, Madison, Penelope, Malachi, and cousin, Gemma. Predeceased by her sister Jacqueline Macalino Thompson.
