Carole Joy Berkowitz, 80, passed away on October 9, 2020, after a short and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was the beloved lifetime companion of Michael Nastacio for 30 years.
Carole was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 18, 1940 to the late Benjamin and Annette Berkowitz. She spent her early life in Brooklyn, she moved to California for a few years and finally settled in New York City. Carole had an established career in property management, where she managed some of the largest buildings in New York City.
Carole was first diagnosed with breast cancer about 10 years ago. She took the diagnosis head on, had a mastectomy, treatment and went on to live her life, cancer free for many years. She took her health seriously, was never late on her mammography or exams. Unfortunately, the cancer returned with a vengeance. Carole started to feel ill in February 2020, but due to COVID-19 and the city being shut down, Carole was unable to get medical care. Finally, in late June 2020, Carole found a doctor that was willing to see her. The results were devastating. She had metastatic breast cancer and the cancer spread to her liver. Carole was determined to fight this disease. She immediately began chemo and fought like hell. Carole passed away peacefully with Mike by her side.
She was a loving partner and dear friend to many. She will be missed dearly.
